Dr. Fruth and her husband Dr. Richard Perren moved to Oxford in 1994 from Yokosuka Japan where her husband was stationed with the United States Navy.  They have three children who have attended public school in Granville County.
Dr. Fruth has been active in the community with a variety of volunteer activities including Granville Little Theatre, The Turkey Trot fundraiser for the food bank, and the public schools.
